Cynthia Helwig, DNP, PMHNP, GNP, is a board-certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) who specializes in mental health. She takes care of patients who are 18 years old and older. She has spent 33 years providing medical and psychiatric care to veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
With 25 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner, Helwig has dedicated her entire career to the medical field. After earning her advanced degrees, she first worked as a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner at the VA. Later, she went back to school to become a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. She then worked in the VA's Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Clinic until she retired from federal service in 2023. During this time, she received special training in treating PTSD. She also served as the Lead Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner for Behavioral Health at the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System.
NP Helwig earned her Bachelor of Nursing degree from William Carey College. She then attended the University of South Alabama, where she earned multiple advanced degrees, including a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (GNP) certification, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification, and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP).
While working on her DNP, NP Helwig also became a Certified iRest Yoga Nidra Teacher. She conducted a study at the VA using iRest Yoga Nidra to help treat veterans with chronic pain and PTSD. She continues to expand her knowledge through ongoing training in different treatments and advanced prescribing practices.
